  • Somnath Jyotirlinga, Gujarat

This temple is one of India's Jyotirlingas. This is the Shrine Eternal in Kathiawar District near Veraval. This Jyotirlinga's narrative goes beyond its devotion. Shiv Purana says the Moon married Daksha Prajapati's 27 daughters. Rohini was the moon's favorite of the 27. His father-in-law cursed him to lose his brightness for his disregard for other women.

Rohini, the moon's wife, went to Somnath to pray to Sparsa Lingam. Lord Shiva was pleased and empowered the moon to restore its brightness. On his desire, Lord Shiva lived there forever as Somnath.

This temple called Kailash of the South is located in Srisailam, Andhra Pradesh. Lord Ganesh married before Kartikeya, according to Shiv Purana. Kartikeya became enraged and proceeded to Krauncha Mountain. Kartikeya was unhappy despite the gods' consolation.

Shiva and Parvati travelled to the mountain, but Kartikeya turned them back. Shiva became a Jyotirlinga and lived in Mallikarjun. Arjuna is Shiva, whereas Mallika is Parvati.

On the Kshipra river in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh's Mahakal forest. The south-facing god is called Dakshinamurti.

Shrikar was attracted by King Chandrasen's devotion to Lord Shiva, according to the Puranas. He worshipped Shiva as a stone. Lord Shiva took the shape of Jyotirlinga and lived in Mahakal's forest.

  • Rameshwar Jyotirlinga, Tamil Nadu

The southernmost Jyotirlinga. Lord Rama reportedly stopped at Rameshwaram on his journey to Sri Lanka to drink water. A divine message warned against worshipping the water.

To destroy Ravana, Lord Rama worshipped a sand linga. He received Lord Shiva's grace, converted linga into Jyotirlinga, and lived there forever.

  • Nageshwar Jyotirlinga, Gujrat

According to the Puranas, Daaruka seized Shiva's follower Supriya in Daarukavana. She recommended reciting "Om Namah Shivaya." The demon wanted to kill Supriya because of this.

Shiva overcame Daaruka to just save his devotee. So, this Gujarat Jyotirlinga was created.

  • Kashi Vishwanath Jyotirlinga, Uttar Pradesh

This area along the Ganga is the lord's favorite. Shiva is said to live here. Lord Shiva is reported to blow mantras of salvation into the ears of natural deaths at this site.

  • Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga, Maharashtra

This temple at Brahmagiri is the origin of the Godavari river. Gautam Rishi was bestowed with an unending grain pit, based on the Shiv Purana. Other gods sent a jealous cow to Rishi, who accidentally slaughtered it.

To cleanse the premises, he prayed to Lord Shiva, who asked Ganga to flow. All gods then asked the lord to settle there. Shiva dwelt by Ganga as Jyotirlinga.

  • Kedarnath Jyotirlinga, Uttarakhand

This famed Aurangabad location is near Ajanta and Ellora caves. Shiv Purana says childless Sudharma and Sudeha lived on Devagiri. Sudeha wedded Ghushma to Sudharma. Sudeha, jealous of Ghushma's 101 lingams, threw their son into the lake. Ghushma begged Lord Shiva for her son.

When the Lord returned her son, Ghushma asked for forgiveness for her sister. So, Shiva decided to incarnate as Jyotirlinga Ghushmeswar. Jyotirlingas are holy sites for Hindus, with a special significance noted in the holy texts, the Puranas.
