1. Killing of Narakasura, the devil

Narkasura was a demon that harassed saints and priests with his extraordinary talents. He started making so much trouble that it was almost impossible to control him. Things got worse when he kidnapped and held hostage the spouses of sixteen thousand Gods. When they could take it no longer, the priests and saints went to Lord Krishna for help.

Lord Krishna comforted the worried priests and saints by promising that those responsible would be brought to justice. Narakasura was cursed so that a woman would kill him. Lord Krishna murdered Narakasura with his wife's help on the Kartik new moon. 16000 hostages were freed and became known as Patraniya. Since then, the new Moon day of Kartik month is celebrated as Narak Chaturdashi.

2. Datyaraj Bali's Story

In this story, Lord Krishna granted Datyaraj Bali a wish. In this myth, Lord Krishna adopted the guise of a dwarf (Vamana Avatar) and fooled king Bali, covering his kingdom in 3 steps between the 13th and new moon days. As promised, King Bali had no choice but to give Lord Vamana the whole kingdom. Datyaraj Bali asked Lord Vamana to allow his contemporaries to rule the country from the 13th until the new Moon day. He requested God to bless with prosperity and wealth anybody who observes Diwali in his dominion.

Lord Yamraj, the lord of death, should also spare those who ignite a lamp on Chaturdashi from his wrath. Lord Krishna, who was in the form of a dwarf, was impressed by how Datyaraj Bali treated the people who lived in his kingdom. So, he made sure that all of King Bali's wishes came true. Since then, it has been a tradition for people to fast on Narak Chaturdashi, light a Diya, and do puja in the evening.
