Nag Panchami as the name suggests is the occasion when people worship snake deities, and/or real snakes in snake pits. Offerings of milk, milk sweets, flowers are made to the deities/snakes. During the festival, fast (vrat) is observed by women, signifying devotion and discipline. Nag Panchami is celebrated during the month of Shravan when snakes are out of their pits since the pits get filled with rainwater.
Women across the nation, during Nag Panchami, offer milk to the snake gods and worship them for the well-being, and health, of their families. Anything offered to the snake gods/snakes on this day, as per Hindu beliefs, would reach directly to the gods. Those who have ‘Kal Sarp Dosha’ in their horoscope, get rid of the curse by worshipping on Nag Panchami. While being offered milk, it is believed that snakes have a sharp memory and remember the faces of those who feed them. Likewise, they remember those who harm them and avenge it later, and the family of those persons also get harmed. Therefore people go out of their way to please snakes and snake gods, especially on Nag Panchami.
