What are Sanskaras?

Sanskaras (Samskaras) are Hindu ceremonies, rituals, and ceremonies that act as transition rites and document different stages of their lives. According to Vedic phrases on dharma and upright living, everyone should undertake a sequence of offerings with sacrifices to deities, forefathers, and guardians. Sanskara, in its broadest sense, refers to a ceremonial action intended at enhancing a person or item.

These are ceremonies conducted throughout a Hindu's life cycle, from birth to death, in which it is believed that destiny that a child brings with him at birth is from a previous life, and that he needs to be freed and cleansed of those bad behaviors, and that the bad actions of the previous life should be transformed into virtues.

What are the different Sanskaras?

In Hinduism, 16 different rituals have been created in the ancient Hindu holy scriptures. Currently, the ritual to be performed is determined by the location, caste, or family customs.

1. Garbhaadaan Sanskara

A married couple performs this ceremony to have a healthy, beautiful, and knowledgeable child. This initial Sanskara, which is part of Garbh Sanskara, is initiated immediately after each marriage.

2. Pumsavan Sanskara

This ritual is performed to conceive a male kid and ensure that he is born healthy, gorgeous, and clever, as well as to ensure that the entire maternity period is normal and free of complications. It's made to ensure that a boy is born. The procedure is carried out in the 3rd month of pregnancy. It is regarded that the parents' thoughts have a significant impact on the fetus' features, hence why this ceremony is performed since, according to the Vedas, this ritual helps the kids grow physically and mentally.

3. Seemantonnayan Sanskara 

It's a ritual that takes place in the 4th month of pregnancy. This ritual is performed to purify the mother's womb, increase her spirit, and support her in thinking nice and pure ideas, as the kid that is in the womb will absorb all of these thoughts. This is an excellent time to address with the mother the positive acts that will keep her happy, as well as how these noble thoughts will affect the unborn child.

4. Jaatkarm Sanskara

When the infant is born even before the umbilical cord is removed, this ceremony is performed to ask for his health, prosperity, renown, energy, wisdom, and long life. The father embraces and blesses the newborn baby, who is fed a small amount of butter and honey. The father whispers nine mantras into the ear of one of the children, requesting fame, vitality, wisdom, health, money, and long life for the child.

5. Naamkaran Sanskara

This ceremony bestows a new name on the infant, blesses it, and wishes it a long and prosperous life. On the 10th day after delivery, it is frequently done. This ritual is performed 101 days after the child's birth in some areas and one year after the child's birth in others. Feeding honey and ghee to the baby while whispering mantras in the baby’s ear is a part of Naamkaran.

6. Nishkraman Sanskara 

Nishkraman is a Sanskrit word that means "to take the kid out of the house." This ritual is held on a lucky day, particularly when both parents are on a pilgrimage. This custom is thought to promote good health and longevity. Nishkraman normally occurs in a child's 4th month of life, when their human senses have fully grown, allowing them to adapt to the natural surroundings, heat, and air.
